Weight loss injections like Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) have had significant coverage in the news recently — and for good reason. Clinical trials show them to be the most effective pharmaceutical weight management tools ever developed, producing average losses of 15–20% of body weight in patients who use them consistently with clinical support.

But for most people in Barnsley and the Dearne Valley, access through the NHS remains extremely limited. NHS specialist weight management services in Barnsley are heavily oversubscribed, with waiting times for a referral from your GP often stretching to 18 months or more.

At Brampton Village Pharmacy, we've opened a pharmacist-led weight loss clinic that offers Mounjaro and Wegovy to eligible patients — usually within days, not months.

How do these injections work?

Mounjaro and Wegovy are both GLP-1 receptor agonists — a class of medication that mimics hormones naturally produced in the gut after eating. NICE Technology Appraisal TA1026 approved tirzepatide (Mounjaro) for weight management in adults, citing evidence of up to 22.5% mean weight reduction in clinical trials. They work by:

  • Reducing appetite by acting on the brain's hunger centres
  • Slowing gastric emptying (you feel full faster and for longer)
  • Helping regulate blood sugar levels

This is fundamentally different from how diet pills or supplements work — it's a clinical treatment that changes your physiology, not a supplement that burns calories.

Who qualifies?

Eligibility criteria are based on NICE guideline NG246 (Obesity in adults: prevention and lifestyle weight management programmes). To be eligible for our weight loss clinic, you typically need:

  • A BMI of 30 or above (obese), or
  • A BMI of 27.5 or above with a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol

There are some medical conditions and medications that may affect suitability, which is why a clinical assessment is always carried out first.

What does the clinic involve?

Your first appointment takes around 30–45 minutes. Your pharmacist will take your weight, height, and blood pressure, discuss your medical history and any medications you're currently taking, and explain the treatment options in plain language. If you're eligible, you can often start your medication the same day.

Monthly review appointments are included as part of the programme — these monitor your progress, manage any side effects, and adjust your dose as needed.

What do they cost?

Mounjaro and Wegovy are available privately, starting from £169 per month. While this isn't a trivial cost, it compares favourably to private GP clinics and weight management programmes, and for many patients the health impact — reducing diabetes risk, blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease risk — makes it a worthwhile investment. The NHS guidance on obesity outlines why achieving a healthy weight reduces risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.
