South Yorkshire is home to a diverse community with family ties stretching across the globe — from Pakistan and India to Nigeria, Jamaica, the Philippines, and beyond. Add to that the popular holiday destinations served by Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Manchester Airport, and it's clear that travel health is a real priority for a significant proportion of local residents.
Yet despite this, many people leave their travel vaccination planning until the last minute, or aren't sure which vaccines they actually need.
Which destinations require travel vaccines?
The level of vaccination required depends on where you're going and what you'll be doing. All destination-specific recommendations are based on guidance from TravelHealthPro — the UK's official travel health resource operated by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Here's a quick guide to common destinations from South Yorkshire:
Pakistan, India, Bangladesh
Most travellers to the Indian subcontinent need, at minimum: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and up-to-date Tetanus/Polio. Depending on your itinerary (rural areas, contact with animals), you may also need Hepatitis B, Rabies, and Japanese Encephalitis. Anti-malarials are required for some regions. See the UKHSA Pakistan travel health guide for the latest recommendations.
Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia
Southeast Asia requires Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and often Hepatitis B and Rabies for travellers visiting rural areas or wildlife. Anti-malarials are recommended for certain regions (not city stays). Japanese Encephalitis should be considered for rural travel during rainy season. Full guidance is available on TravelHealthPro Thailand.
Africa (Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania)
Sub-Saharan Africa often requires Yellow Fever vaccination (essential for some countries and a legal entry requirement for others), Hepatitis A, Typhoid, anti-malarials, and Meningitis vaccines. Yellow Fever requires a designated NHS Yellow Fever vaccination centre — we will advise you on this during your consultation.
Europe and popular holiday destinations
For most European destinations, standard UK vaccinations are sufficient. However, if you're travelling to more rural areas or participating in activities involving animals, Rabies may be recommended. Check your Hepatitis A status if visiting areas with lower food hygiene standards. The NHS travel vaccinations guide is a useful starting point.
How far in advance do I need to book?
Ideally, book your travel health consultation 4–6 weeks before departure. This allows time for vaccines that require multiple doses (such as Hepatitis B, which involves 3 doses over several weeks). However, we can provide same-day vaccinations for last-minute travellers — many common travel vaccines can be given on the day of your appointment.
