If you've struggled to get a same-day GP appointment in Barnsley recently, you're not alone. Barnsley has one of the lowest GP-to-patient ratios in Yorkshire, and getting seen for something that feels urgent — a sore throat, a suspected ear infection, a UTI — can mean waiting days or even weeks.

That's exactly what NHS Pharmacy First is designed to fix.

What is NHS Pharmacy First?

NHS Pharmacy First is a service that allows trained pharmacists to assess, advise, and — where clinically appropriate — prescribe treatment for seven common conditions, without you needing a GP appointment first. It launched nationally in January 2024 as part of the NHS Primary Care Recovery Plan. It's free, available Monday to Saturday at Brampton Village Pharmacy, and usually means you're seen and sorted within 20 minutes of walking through the door.

Which 7 conditions does Pharmacy First cover?

According to NHS Business Services Authority guidance, the seven conditions covered under Pharmacy First are:

  • Sinusitis — in adults
  • Sore throat — in adults and children over 5
  • Earache — in children aged 1–17
  • Infected insect bites — in adults and children over 1
  • Impetigo — in adults and children over 1
  • Shingles — in adults over 18
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) — in women aged 16–64

For all of these conditions, your pharmacist can carry out a clinical assessment and issue a prescription if needed — the medication can often be dispensed the same day, from the same pharmacy, without you needing to go anywhere else.

Do I need a GP referral for Pharmacy First?

No. You don't need a GP referral, a prior appointment, or even to be registered with a GP. Simply walk into Brampton Village Pharmacy during opening hours and ask for a Pharmacy First consultation. We'll see you as quickly as possible.

What if my condition is more serious?

Our pharmacists are trained to identify when a condition needs medical attention beyond what Pharmacy First covers. If we have any clinical concerns, we'll refer you directly to your GP, the urgent treatment centre, or 999 in an emergency — and we'll give you a written summary of our assessment. The NICE guidelines on managing common infections inform the clinical decision pathways we follow.

Why this matters for Barnsley

In Barnsley, where GP appointment backlogs are a daily reality for thousands of residents, Pharmacy First isn't just a convenient shortcut — it's a clinically sound, NHS-endorsed pathway that gets people the treatment they need quickly, appropriately, and without adding to the pressure on already-stretched GP practices.

At Brampton Village Pharmacy, we carry out more than 30 Pharmacy First consultations every month. If you've been putting off seeing someone about a sore throat, an ear problem, or a possible UTI because you can't get a GP appointment, come and see us instead.
