Free NHS MenB Vaccination in Barnsley & Rotherham

We use Bexsero, a MenB vaccine with a good safety record that has been used in the UK childhood immunisation programme since 2015. It is not a live vaccine, so it cannot give you meningitis. The vaccine is given as a small injection into the upper arm by a trained pharmacist vaccinator in our private consultation room, and the appointment itself takes only a few minutes plus a short wait afterwards.

Most people have only mild effects, usually a sore arm and sometimes feeling a bit off for a day or two. These settle quickly, and paracetamol can help if you need it. As with any vaccination, some people feel faint, so we will look after you and ask you to stay for a few minutes after your jab. Serious reactions are very rare.

The MenB vaccine protects against most strains of MenB, but not every cause of meningitis and septicaemia. Whether or not you have been vaccinated, always be aware of the signs and get urgent medical help if you or a friend become seriously unwell. Trust your instincts, meningitis and septicaemia can develop very quickly.

This is a special, time-limited NHS programme to protect young people at the age when meningococcal disease is more likely. The risk is higher for students starting university and college, who move into halls and mix closely with lots of new people from all over the country and the world. That environment lets bacteria spread more easily, which is why the timing of your vaccination matters.

Because MenB is a two-dose vaccine given at least four weeks apart, and it takes around two weeks after the second dose to build protection, it is best to have both doses before you leave for university or college. If you have started but cannot complete the course before term, you can still have your first dose here and arrange your second wherever you are studying, as long as it is by 31 March 2027. Getting started is what matters.

Because this offer is only available for a limited time, it is worth booking sooner rather than later. If you are in Year 13 or heading to university or college for the first time this autumn, do not wait until the deadline approaches, when appointments are busiest.

This NHS programme is a one-off, time-limited offer for three specific groups: the Year 13 age group and first-year university and college students within the eligible birth-date ranges. If you fall outside these groups, for example postgraduates, older students, or people who need MenB for travel or work, this particular NHS offer is not available. Please speak to your GP or an appropriate service about MenB vaccination for other reasons.

If you have had a MenB vaccine before, you may not need this course. If you completed a full two-dose MenB course in the last five years, you will not usually need another. If you only had one dose, or had it a long time ago, you may still be eligible. Let us know at your appointment and our pharmacist will advise you.
