Who qualifies for a free NHS flu vaccination in Barnsley?
You are entitled to a free NHS flu jab if you are:
- Aged 65 or over
- Pregnant (at any stage of pregnancy)
- Living with a long-term health condition, including:
- Asthma or COPD
- Diabetes (type 1 or 2)
- Heart disease
- Kidney or liver disease
- Neurological conditions (including stroke or TIA)
- A weakened immune system
- A carer for an elderly or disabled person
- A frontline NHS or social care worker
- A child aged 2 or 3 years old (nasal flu spray, not injection)
What if I don't qualify for a free jab?
If you're not in one of the above categories but still want to protect yourself from flu, you can get a private flu vaccination at Brampton Village Pharmacy for £15. This is available to anyone, with no appointment needed — simply walk in during opening hours.
When should I get my flu jab?
The best time to get vaccinated is October or early November. The vaccine takes about two weeks to become fully effective, so getting it before flu starts circulating in South Yorkshire gives you the best protection throughout the winter months.
We typically start our flu programme in late September and continue through to March. Don't wait until December — by then, flu is already circulating and you may be exposed before protection kicks in.
Can I have my flu jab and COVID booster at the same time?
Yes — if you're eligible for both vaccinations, they can be given at the same appointment in different arms. This is what the NHS recommends. Ask about your COVID booster eligibility when you come in for your flu jab.
